Is Red Light Therapy Real?

Red Light Therapy is a type of treatment that may help with skin problems, muscle tissue repair, and other parts of your body that may need healing. Red Light Therapy is also called low-level laser therapy (LLLT), Photobiomodulation (PBM), and Laser therapy. What RLT does is it exposes you to different types of light waves that can cause a change in your cells. One light is the Red light, which is visible to the eye, the other in Near Infrared, which is invisible to the eye.

Red Light Therapy is a type of method that uses Red and Near-Infrared Light to treat a variety of issues such as wrinkles, skin roughness, collagen density and more. It uses Light in the range of 600NM to 850NM to penetrate roughly 5cm into the skin and tissue to promote collagen and cellular repair and revitalization. This allows cells to repair themselves and create an optimal environment for proper Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production which fuels other cellular processes

With RLT, you expose your skin to a laser, lamp, or device that uses Red Light or Near-infrared light waves. This light penetrates your skin and allows the mitochondria of your cells to soak up these light waves and create more ATP, or more energy. This action is believed to spur healing in the muscle tissue and skin, and helps cells repair themselves so they can become more efficient.

Red Light Therapy does not burn or hurt the skin, and is very safe and effective. This light is not the same style as tanning beds and does not expose you to dangerous and damaging light waves or rays.

There have been hundreds of clinic and laboratory studies conducted to determine if this type of therapy has medical benefits. Many of these studies have very promising results and believe that RLT is effective in a variety of different treatments. Some of the benefits include,

  1. Promoting hair growth in people with certain disorders.
  2. Stimulates slow-healing wounds.
  3. Short-term pain relief
  4. Improves joint health in people with degenerative disease.
  5. Relieves minor pain and inflammation.

RLT isn’t covered by any insurance companies, so it’s up to you to find out where you can grab a unit, however, you might be able to find units at your local Direct Care clinic, or some gyms and tanning salons offer Red Light Therapy, Red Light therapy devices are also sold online in many different shapes and sizes.

RLT is considered a safe and painless option for light therapy, however, some users have reported being burned and blisters appearing after use, most of the time this is due to user error or a faulty unit. Some users also report eye pain, and even though it’s safer on the eyes than most other lasers and therapy options, it is still recommended to use eye protection.

Red Light Therapy is exploding around the country and popping up in gyms, salons, clinics, and even dental offices. The benefits are great and many clinicians and doctors are adding units to their businesses. There are also many online sellers such as Cellustra that offer personal therapy devices that you can use in the comfort of your home.

Red Light Therapy is an up and coming new treatment option that treats a variety of issues. Skincare, hair growth, and pain relief are the top contenders for treatment and we would recommend reaching out to your dermatologist or doctor before trying something new. There are many units available online and we recommend checking out Cellustra for more device options

Altering cellular function using low level, non-thermal LED light is called photobiomodulation (PBM) or low-level light therapy (LLLT), and is a medical treatment modality of increasing clinical importance.1 Because of the combination of high degree of penetration in skin2 and absorption by respiratory chain components, light in the spectral range from 600 to 1300 nm is useful for promoting wound healing, tissue repair, and skin rejuvenation.” – NCBI
